(Nairobi, Kenya) — The TPLF led Tigray Regional Government issued an official statement alleging that full-scale military conflict has resumed across the region, accusing the ruling Prosperity Party of launching a coordinated offensive along the eastern corridor bordering the Afar Region.
According to the official communique released from Mekelle on Saturday, regional authorities reported that armed clashes commenced early in the morning, describing the military push as an “escalation aimed at subjugating Tigray’s regional autonomy.”
The United States and European Union, among others, have been undertaking diplomatic efforts to avert another conflict in the Tigray region, which they fear could spill over to other parts of the region.
Regional authorities alleged that federal forces have persistently sought “to weaken Tigray’s administrative structures and military capabilities despite existing peace frameworks.”
“The Prosperity Party’s system, which has constantly tried to destroy the Tigrayan people through war and broken rules, has now caused a bigger level of conflict,” the statement reads.
The communique further accused federal authorities of violating international norms and attempting to forcibly dismantle regional security organs through sustained military pressure prior to the reported Eastern front offensive.
In response to the reported military developments, the TPLF-led Tigray Regional Government issued a comprehensive mobilization directive, appealing to regional security units, local forces, civil society organizations, and religious bodies to rally under a banner of regional salvation. The current regional administration lacks recognition from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia; instead, the Tadesse Worede-led Interim Administration holds official recognition.
The release from the TPLF further claimed that “The system [Federal government] has kept trying to control and weaken the people of Tigray.”
It added, “After using regular warfare and building up their military to pressurize, they have now started the attack again to take back Tigray and make the people give up.”
The regional government advised residents to exercise heightened security awareness and indicated that detailed military operational updates would be provided by designated security officials.
The federal government and the Ethiopian Defense Force did not comment on the allegations at the time of this writing.
Reports indicate that the TPLF has been building up forces near Raya.
Forces that broke away from what the TPLF calls the Tigray Defense Force have been operating along the Afar-Tigray boundaries for nearly a year, if not longer. These forces, calling themselves the Tigray Peace Force, have accused the TPLF of working to reignite conflict in the region and opposed the TPLF’s military and political alliance with the Eritrean government.
