Small-arms fighting during 4-5 April between ethnic Amhara and Tigrayan militiamen at the Waldeba monastery in western Tigray region, Ethiopia, resulted in six deaths (one Amhara and five Tigrayans), according to reports in Ethiopian diaspora media.

Security forces had also reportedly detained 39 monks associated with the monastery earlier in the week, after they publicly protested against long-standing government plans to establish a sugar plantation and processing plant on monastery land. Waldeba monastery is located in the eastern part of Welkait district, which Amhara opposition and protest groups claim rightfully belongs to the Amhara region instead of Tigray.
