KEY MESSAGES
•Food insecurity rates improved slightly but remain high, according to the newly released Mid-Year Review of Ethiopia’s Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD), with the number of people requiring food assistance moving from 10.2 million (January, 2016) to 9.7 million (August, 2016).
•Livestock sector needs have more than tripled since the start of the year. An estimated 2.4 million households now require urgent assistance to protect their livestock. With a potential La Niña looming, the provision of livelihood-saving interventions will be crucial in order to lower food insecurity rates and improve household nutrition.
•Last planting windows provide critical opportunity for farming households. Upwards of 500 000 farming households still require agricultural inputs to meet late season planting windows and improve their household food security ahead of an imminent lean season.
