WASHINGTON, DC – Ana Gomes, the Honorable Member of European Parliament and a time-tested friend of the Ethiopian people, called on the European Union to see to the crimes in Ethiopia where government security forces On October 2 in Bishoftu town, 40 km southeast of Addis, caused the death of 678 people. Many remained unaccounted for after they fell into deep ravines and a nearby lake.

Over 2 million Oromo people were celebrating Irreecha, a Thanksgiving religious day, when security forces used live ammunition and tear gas to breakup peaceful protests by youths. In the ensuing stampede, many fell to their deaths in deep ravines and a lake. Independent sources say the number of deaths would exceed 1000 because many were believed dead in the sea, and little or no effort has been made to retrieve bodies from the sea for lack of equipment or an organized rescue mission.

The Bishoftu Massacre has now led to the flare-up of protests in several towns in Oromia region, including those skirting the Ethiopian capital.
